It was a cold, winter day in Alicante. Helen went out to go buy a new sereph blade because she broke the last one when she went demon hunting. What she thought was a typical day turned out to be the day she met the love of her life, Aline Penhallow.
Helen had just walked out of the shop when she decided to go to the town square. On the way there, she stopped to grab a cup of coffee. She was freezing cold but the coffee gave her a bit of warmth.
She got to the town square and sat down on the bench. She took a sip of her coffee when a dark haired girl approached her. Helen had to take a double take. The girl had unique features but that made her look stunning. Helen smiled at the girl and spoke in a neutral tone,”Hello.”
"Hello." Said the girl."My name is Aline Penhallow. You know, daughter of Jia Penhallow." Aline smiled back at Helen.
"Hey, I am Helen Blackthorn." Helen knew of her sexuality but she never dared to speak of it. The shadowhunters were shunned or frowned upon if you were gay, lesbian, or bisexual. So Helen kept it a secret. On the other hand, Aline was very open on her sexuality. One of the things Helen admired about Aline was that she is brave.
"I know who you are. "Aline grinned at the light blonde haired girl.
Helen was taken aback at her comment. Helen was on the council but she was not popular. Being part faerie makes people look at you oddly and question if you are one of the nephilim. So she tried to lay low.
"Really? " said Helen moments after.
"Yes." Aline sat next to Helen. Aline’s arm was lightly brushing Helen’s arm. Helen had blushed a bit. It was very hard to make Helen blush but not even five minutes and this girl had made her go red. Aline started talking which snapped her out of her thoughts.
"So….what do you think?" The dark haired girl looked at the light haired girl with curiosity.
"I am sorry I zoned out a bit. What did you say before?"
"I asked.."Aline could not help but smirk. "If you would like to attend a party my family is hosting?"
Helen smiled,”I would love to. When is it?”
"Now…well in ten minutes"
Helen started laughing then spoke,”Ten minutes? Could not find anyone to go with you could you?” Helen knew it sounded rude but it didn’t mean to come out that way.
This time Aline blushed,”Actually…..I could not find you all day. Or yesterday either.”
By this point Helen had stopped laughing and stared at the girl. Her pale skin made her blush easily to see and she bet it was all over her face.”I would be honoured to go with you.” That made Aline smile.
Helen had nothing to wear to the party. She surely could not wear what she was wearing. She had on some old, worn out pants and a long sleeve shirt. That is definitely not how she would dress to a party.
Aline walked her to her house then lead Helen to Aline’s room. She shut the behind her. Helen was a bit nervous then spoke,”I have nothing to wear. To the party I mean.”
Aline smiled innocently. “You can borrow some of my clothes. It is no big deal. I have lots of clothes.” At that, Helen blushed. Aline grabbed a black dress and started to undress in front of Helen. Helen could not help but to stare.
"Like what you see?" Aline winked at Helen. Helen’s face instantly turned red. Helen had no idea how Aline can make her blush this much.
"I-I…Uh….Yeah?" Helen said. She did like what she saw but was afraid to say so.
Aline smiled innocently and changed into the dress. Helen got up and picked out a red dress. She changed into it and realized how short the dress is on her but it also fits her figure perfectly.
"Ready?" Aline said.
“Ready.” Helen inquired. Aline took her hand and salked downstairs to the party.
Helen and Aline walked downstairs to the party. Helen was a few steps behind Aline, not really knowing what to do. She has never been to a Penhallow’s party before. Not only was this her first actual party but she is attending it with a girl. Helen felt a little worried. All her life she was treated differently because she was part faerie. She will be judged even more for her sexuality. Helen learned how to bear it but she never liked the looks and stares.
Aline glanced at Helen and said,”You okay?”
"Yeah,I’m fine." Replied Helen.
Aline just nodded and went over to her parents. Helen followed but she stayed a few steps behind.
Jia Penhallow looked at Helen then looked at Aline, raising a brow.
“So…” Jia said with curiosity. “You two are friends?”
"Yes mother" Aline replied with a little annoyance in her voice. Helen looked away from the Penhallows.
Aline noticed Helen look away then walks over to her, grabbing her hand and tugging her away from her parents. Once they got far enough away from Aline’s mother, she turned to Helen.
"I am so sorry about her. She means no harm but she can be very…what’s the word? Oh yes, nosy!" Aline said.
"It is okay. Parents can be like that. Well my parents were…The ones who raised me I mean." Helen replied, voice quiet and looking distant.
"Hey, it’s okay Helen. Things happen and I know it sucks and all but you can get through this, okay?"
"Yeah…I know Aline, thank you." Helen smiled at the girl.
"Let’s get out of here. This party is pretty boring." Aline looks around at all the other nephilim, while resting a hand on Helen’s waist which made the other girl blush. Aline notices her blush and grins.
The two of them walked out then Helen turns to the other girl.
"I actually had fun. That was only because you were there." Helen said, blushing.
Aline could not help but smile wide. “I’m glad.” At that, Aline pulled the other girl close to her, pressing Helen’s body against her own. Helen was taken aback by her move. Aline then wrapped her slender arms around Helen’s waist and kisses her softly and gently. Helen smiles into the kiss, kissing back just as soft and she lays a hand on Aline’s cheek.
Slowly, Aline pulls away. “Let’s get out of here.” Aline said as she grabbed Helen’s hand pulling her away from the house. Helen laughs and follows.
Both girls walked all around Alicante. They were laughing as they shared stories of their lives. Helen spoke up. “I remember when Jules was a little kid and he ate wax. Not only was he eating it but he was covered in it. His hair was the worst!” Both girls started laughing.
"I had a blast with you tonight. I’m glad I finally found you and asked you." Aline said, blushing a little.
"You know, The night is not over. Maybe we can go grab coffee? That is..if you want to I mean." Helen said, smiling.
"I would love to. I love coffee!" Aline giggled, replying.
Helen smiled wide then said,”That’s great! I love it too. Though, I don’t have it a lot because I need to watch my siblings a lot and they are a handful but I love them.Coffee kind of has this weird effect on me to where I can’t concentrate.” Helen blushed, realizing she is rambling. “Sorry, I’m rambling.”
"No, its fine. I love how you talk about you’re siblings. It is obvious you love them very much and would do anything for them. I love that about you. " Aline smiled, nudging the other girl’s arm.
Helen looks at Aline seriously. “I really like you Aline. I have never felt this way about anyone before. Definitely not about a girl before. A very pretty girl at that. I am usually pretty protective but with you I don’t have to be. I am already judged by being half faerie and liking girls is just another reason to be shunned and judged. It is worth it for you though.” Helen leads Aline in the coffee shop.
Aline looks at Helen and gives her a quick kiss.”I am very happy that you don’t have to be protective around me. I promise on Raziel’s name that I will never judge you. You are one of the best tings that has happened to me and it has only been a night. So, would you like to be my girlfriend?”
Helen immedietly hugs Aline and nods quickly.”Yes, yes of course!”
Aline hugs back, smiling.” I am so glad you said yes. I wished you did and I am so happy you said yes.” Aline slowly pulls away after a while then orders her coffee. She pulls out her money to pay.
Helen stops Aline from pulling out her money.”No, I got it. You took me to the party and let me borrow you’re clothes. Its the least I can do. ” Helen grins then orders her coffee. She pulls out her money paying for both. She walks over and sits down in a chair, sipping her coffee.
Aline sits across from Helen, sipping her coffee also. “This has been really fun. Thank you Helen.”
"And thank you Aline. It has been a joy hanging out with you." Helen replies.
A few minutes go by and Aline is the one to speak up first.”So, is it hard raising all you’re siblings?”
"No..well I mean it is but Mark helps. They are a bit older now so at least they are not babies anymore. They are all starting to find their hobbies which calms them all. Like Jules loves painting. He is an amazing artist. I love watching him paint. "Helen smiles as she speaks.
Aline listens closely, grinning. After a few minutes of Helen talking about her siblings, Aline speaks up.”Wow, I should really meet these kids. They sound pretty cool. I especially want to meet them because they are related to you.” Aline winks then giggles.
Helen laughs then says,”They are not fully related to me but they might as well be. The funny thing is, all of us act completely different to one another. It’s really shocking. But it is really cool because one of us is good at an area while the other is really bad and the one who is good at it can teach the other how to do it right. Its interesting really.”
"So..if for example, Julian is bad at a bow and lets just say Emma is really good at it. She would teach him?" Aline asked with curiosity.
Helen nods then says,”Yes but Julian and Emma are parabatai so they would help each other anyways. Their relationship is…different from other parabatai relationships. Its like there is something between them but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
"Maybe they are just really close?" Aline replies,"Like Parabatai are naturally close. Maybe since they have known each other since they were babies that they are just closer. Might not be anything besides that."
Maybe your right” Helen hears her phone goes off in the notification ringtone she set it to. Checks the text she just got then quickly stands up.” I am so sorry for leaving like this but Ty just some up and he won’t stop crying. I am so sorry!” Helen kissed Aline’s cheek then runs off to the Blackthorn’s house. Aline stares after the girl then finally gets up, heading to her own house.
I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.
I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.
I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.
I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so—for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.
I wanted more time so we could fall in love. I got my wish, I suppose. I left my scar.
